Astigmatism

Astigmatism is an optical condition that results from either an irregularly shaped cornea, the protective outer layer of the eye, or sometimes the curvature of the lens within the eye. The condition exhibits itself through distorted vision, which can make objects appear blurry at both a near and far distance. While the specific cause of astigmatism is unknown, the condition is very common. Many times it is hereditary and presents itself from birth. The symptoms of astigmatism are known to become more or less prominent over time.

The best way to identify astigmatism is through a comprehensive eye exam. Based on the results of your exam, our doctors can offer corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses. Additionally, if you are undergoing cataract surgery, West Michigan Eye & Laser offers specialty intraocular lenses that help correct astigmatism.  If you think astigmatism is affecting your eyesight, schedule an appointment with West Michigan Eye & Laser so that we can determine the best solution for you.
